TN(V)R in Egypt: How Paws and Claws Saves Stray Cats and Dogs

A Lifeline for Egypt’s Forgotten Animals

Every day in Egypt, an estimated 15 million stray cats and dogs wander the streets searching for food, safety, and a moment of kindness. Many have never experienced a gentle touch, a full meal, or a safe place to rest. At Paws and Claws Animal Welfare Society, we carry a mission that grows heavier by the day—yet we refuse to give up. Through TN(V)R: Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Release, we fight to give these animals something they’ve rarely been offered: hope.

Why We Do This Work

The suffering we witness is overwhelming. Injuries left untreated. Mothers nursing litter after litter in dangerous streets. Puppies and kittens born into a world that has no place for them. But every animal we help is a life changed—and every life changed is a small victory against a massive problem.

How TN(V)R Saves Lives

We bring humane traps from the United States to capture cats and dogs calmly and safely. They’re frightened, unsure of what comes next—but what follows is often the first care they’ve ever known. At local veterinary clinics, they receive treatment for wounds, vaccinations against rabies, and are spayed or neutered so they no longer contribute to the endless cycle of suffering.

Dogs are given ear tags so they won’t be targeted by government mass-poisoning campaigns—still the country’s primary method of population control. This simple tag can be the difference between life and death.

After they recover, we return them to the place they know best. And if that place isn’t safe, we find them a new one—somewhere quieter, kinder, and less dangerous.

Opening Our Doors to the Community

When our funding allows, we host “open house” days at our shelter. These days are filled with people from our community holding the pets they love, grateful for the chance to have them spayed or neutered at no cost. We use these moments to gently educate—to explain why TN(V)R matters, why a single unspayed cat can bring more than 100 kittens into a life of hardship, and why one unneutered dog can lead to over 50 puppies struggling to survive.

One Animal at a Time, Thousands Saved

It’s hard to imagine, but for every animal we help, thousands of future lives—lives that would have suffered—are prevented. It’s a quiet kind of heroism. Slow, steady, and deeply meaningful.

Our mission is vast, and the challenges are endless. But each life touched reminds us why we keep going. Hope doesn’t arrive in grand gestures. It arrives in small ones—one trap, one treatment, one animal at a time.
